It's not a party until there's a cow in the room.

It’s not a party until there’s a cow in the room.

Last week, the Cute Potato gang celebrated a friend’s first birthday with a tour of Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. The kids were introduced to the farm’s calves and their (very large) milking mamas.

Besides the cupcakes and ice cream, the highlight was meeting a calf that was just six hours old. She was a little wobbly, but even with the curious crowd of partygoers surrounding her, the calf managed to stand for the first time.

StrwFest_poster_final_full_size-539x780It’s strawberry season, and this weekend, there are a host of festivals around the state. We like the sound of the Strawberry Fest, June 26-27, at Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth. The farm will also be open for PYO strawberries, perfect for all kinds of yummy, summer recipes.

Not close to Cape? Get your strawberry fix at one of these great spots:

Oh so yummy kourabiedes

Oh so yummy kourabiedes

The Greek Heritage Festival starts in Portland tomorrow, and all of us at Cute Potato are ready to drown ourselves in pastries. Don’t miss the kourabiedes – yummy butter cookies covered in powdered sugar. They’re very messy, but who cares? You’re at a party where eating takes precedence. Or bibs. You choose.

There’s also live music, so if you’re little ones are anything like Cute Potato #1 and #2, they’ll be tearing up the dance floor.

Best of all, the rain or shine festival takes place under a tent. Opa!

Cute Potato #1 and #2 helped make t-shirts to surprise Dad on Sunday. What a fun and easy project! We found our t-shirts at A.C.Moore in South Portland (2/$5), as well as a host of iron-on options. Here are the adorable results:

We love visiting and supporting our local farms at Cute Potato, and Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport is one of our favorites. At the Spring Festival today, the kids enjoyed the music of the Casco Bay Ramblers, whose sound reminds us a little of Johnny Cash. Cute Potato #1 and #2 loved the Ramblers cover of “You Are My Sunshine,” and were especially taken with one particular yodeling solo.

After the show, we spent time peering at the sheep, baby goats, cows and roosters. Cute Potato#2 was so excited, he started to sing the chorus to “Old MacDonald” unprompted.

The best part of the festival was the fun craft projects for the kids. Both made masks out of paper plates, pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks. And Cute Potato #1 made a beautiful beaded bracelet. We decided on the way home that we would buy our own beads so we could make more.

Wolfe’s Neck Farm has great events throughout the year—many tailored to kids and families. Keep an eye on their calendar. We know we will.

Now showing at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth

Now showing at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth

All day Thursday, team Cute Potato was hoping it wouldn’t rain, so we could attend the Maine Audubon’s Annual Peony Bloom and Ice Cream Social. We love ice cream, especially when it’s free! And we were looking forward to viewing the peony garden.

The good news? The stunning pink, white and fuschia blooms at the Audubon’s Gilsland Farm did not disappoint – even with a little rain beginning to fall.

And the table for the social was set up indoors, so it seemed all was not lost, until we learned the ice cream wouldn’t be served until 6:30. The team looked wilted, but all were temporarily revived when they spotted the great books, toys and gifts in the Audubon’s Nature Store.

As for the ice cream social? The Cute Potato kids were sleepy, and needed to head home pronto. But the Audubon isn’t going away. And we’ll be back soon to enjoy the gardens with ice cream cones in hand.

Cute Potato #1 and #2 in their new hats

Cute Potato #1 and #2 in their new hats

Here at Cute Potato,
we love our local toy and gift shops, but sometimes, the budget takes precedent.

So on a rainy Sunday, after hours of being cooped up in the house, we piled the team into the car and drove south to the Family Dollar Store. Yes, you heard us right. You need to pick and choose wisely (just how old is that bag of popcorn?) but check out the fireman hats we found. They’re surprisingly sturdy and resulted in hours of imaginative play.

The kids also discovered Wiffle ball bats, colorful beach pails and shovels. And we stocked up on hair brushes, which always seem to be in short supply at our house.

Cheap? Sure. But definitely worth a visit.
