CP#1 is a big fan of her Grandma Cookie. They both have an affinity for the beach, sparkly sunglasses and mismatched socks. Simply put, they are two peas in a pod.
Grandma Cookie has been traveling across country for a month, and CP#1 misses her more each day. To help, we’ve been reading Seven Days of Daisy by Peaks Island author and illustrator Jamie Hogan. The story is about a preschool girl named Daisy, who is anticipating her grandmother’s summer visit.
A week seems like a long time to Daisy. She plays on the beach with friends, takes a boat trip, rides the ferry and makes up stories for her Nana to enjoy — all as a means to pass the time. At the end of each day, Daisy places a big, red “X” on the calendar by her bed.
Seven Days of Daisy teaches young readers the days of the week without being too obvious. The story is beautifully detailed, and Jamie’s gorgeous chalk illustrations make the island come alive. In the end, little ones realize that a week isn’t as long as it may seem.
