The team traveled to Boothbay Harbor recently to visit the Maine State Aquarium. The aquarium is small, but the interactive exhibits and the beautiful location make it well worth a visit.

CP#2, who is enthralled with sharks lately, couldn’t wait to see one close up. Not only did he get to see a shark, he was able to pet one in the touch tank (with supervision of course). We learned that chain cat sharks are nocturnal, so CP#2’s new friend didn’t mind being patted at all.

CP#2 visits the 850-gallon tank where skates and cat sharks make their home.

MP is regularly in search of manageable walks she can take with the kids—hikes that give CP#1 and #2 a sense of accomplishment, and that don’t cause reactions like “I’m tired! I want to go back to the car!” That’s why MP likes the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells.

The refuge is the perfect spot to enjoy an easy nature walk with family. Parking is close to the trail’s entrance (as are the bathrooms) and there are a few picnic tables to enjoy lunch. Just be sure to bring bug spray!

At garden camp this week, the Cute Potato kids made homemade cards using sliced carrots, beets, eggplant, potatoes, and peppers as stamps. The counselors set up a simple working station with plates of tempera paint and colorful cards. MP enjoyed watching the kids create their own special patterns and designs.

MP steers clear of touristy sorts of things most of the time, but when Keith Nuki, owner of the Portland Fire Engine Co., invited the team to tour Portland by fire truck, she was intrigued. Keith’s 1971 Fleetstar truck is hard to resist, especially when it comes to kids who love fire engines.
