Maine State Aquarium

The team traveled to Boothbay Harbor recently to visit the Maine State Aquarium. The aquarium is small, but the interactive exhibits and the beautiful location make it well worth a visit.

CP#2, who is enthralled with sharks lately, couldn’t wait to see one close up. Not only did he get to see a shark, he was able to pet one in the touch tank (with supervision of course). We learned that chain cat sharks are nocturnal, so CP#2’s new friend didn’t mind being patted at all.

CP#2 visits the 850-gallon tank where skates and cat sharks make their home.

The team also enjoyed the smaller touch tank, which is filled with clams, horseshoe crabs, sea urchins, and hermit crabs. The aquarium guide let the kids touch a lobster. To their delight, he also showed them how to make a clam spit water. The kids giggled every time the clam sprayed water from the tank.

We also took time to peer into the tanks. The team enjoyed the lovely glow of the sea anemones, the unique, bright blue lobster, and native fish.

There are also several fun activities for families to discover. CP#2 especially liked a station that shows novices how to band lobster claws. The nine-year old in front of us banded her plastic lobster with aplomb, but MP needs practice.

Outside the aquarium, we discovered a touch box, which held hidden gems like a whale baleen—a filter system inside a whale’s mouth. The kids also loved the wooden rubbing board with raised marine life designs. They each took turns with paper and crayons to make sea gulls, starfish, and more.

The team had such a wonderful time during our visit. More than anything, MP loved the gorgeous peninsula where the aquarium is located. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches to soak up the views. Make time to sit and stay for a while.
