MP doesn’t typically get personal on these pages, but today, as she prepares to launch Cute Potato’s first online fundraiser for The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, she thought it would be worth sharing a CP family story with you.

Meet Jack.
In August, MP’s nephew Jack was born weighing 6 lbs. 10 ounces, looking healthy, fabulous, and ready to greet the world. After a few days in the hospital, Jack’s mom and dad, both new parents, were looking forward to bringing their baby home to begin their lives together as a family.

MP meets her nephew for the first time.

MP meets her nephew for the first time.

During his first week, Jack lost weight. He was nursing, but struggling to do so. His mom grew concerned and checked in with Jack’s pediatrician. He told her not worry. Babies often lose weight when they first arrive home. Then Jack lost more. He wheezed when he nursed. He pulled his legs to his belly after feeding and cried. His parents decided to call a lactation consultant. When the consultant heard the baby nurse, she recommended he be brought to the hospital immediately.

Note: The Portland Flea-for-All will be moving its location to 585 Congress Street in Fall 2016, according to a June 14, 2016 article by Kathleen Pierce of the Bangor Daily News.

MP and CP#1 enjoyed a girls’ day out recently, while the boys headed to the Museum of Science in Boston for the Mammoths and Mastodons exhibit. We ladies decided to stay local and started our day with a decadent brunch at Silly’s in Portland.

After we stuffed ourselves on pancakes and eggs, MP decided to visit the Portland Flea-for-All. CP#1 is always game for shopping, but MP silently wondered if a flea market would be the best place for a six year-old girl.

The team has been on a homemade granola kick lately, sampling a variety of recipes to find which we like best. MP decided to take granola a step further and make homemade granola bars for school snacks. We all agree the homemade version is ten times better than boxed. The satisfying granola bars are flavorful, moist, and naturally sweetened with honey. Best of all, the whole house smells delicious when you bake them.

MP prefers store brand oatmeal for this recipe. It’s typically less expensive and you can buy a big canister for future granola bars. She splurges on local honey instead. The team likes the dark, late season honey from the Maine Audubon Nature Store.

The car thermometer read 8º when MP drove the kids to the school this morning. The serious chill in the air made her crave hot tea, a fire in the woodstove, and her favorite quilt.

It’s moments like these that lead MP on searches for items like Maine made blankets. Sure enough, she came across a lovely little Etsy shop called The Early Girl. Shop owner Shannon Johnson chooses colorful, fun fabrics to create cozy quilts for babies and toddlers. This lobster and gray striped quilt is one of many unique choices available in her shop.
