Treworgy Family Orchard is located in Levant, just 10 miles outside of Bangor, where owner Gary Treworgy and his big creative family design an incredible corn maze on the grounds of their farm. Since 2001, visitors have enjoyed their impressive mazes — which have ranged from a variety of animals to a Celtic labyrinth and even a knight fighting a dragon! This year’s design is Paul Bunyan, Legendary Lumberjack, and our crew decided it was high time we visit the farm to experience the maze for ourselves.

Wells Reserve at Laudholm is home to a beautiful historic farmhouse and 7-miles of trails where families can explore forest, a salt marsh and estuary, and Laudholm Beach. The wide open spaces in between are perfect for sledding, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. If that weren’t enough to entice you, the staff at the Reserve has a few great days of activities planned for February vacation  — from nature-inspired camps and crafts to a day dedicated to spending time outdoors.

Our team recently had the opportunity to check out “Dinosaurs Unearthed” at Portland Science Center. The interactive exhibit is like Jurassic Park come to life. Families will find thirteen fully animatronic dinosaurs that were created by paleontologists and researchers to make the dinosaurs appear as close to the real thing as possible. The exhibit is particularly exciting for Portland, as the show marks its debut in New England.

We were excited to learn about the opening of the new Portland Science Center last fall, and since then, it’s been on our bucket list of places to visit. The center was designed to create an atmosphere of entertainment and learning, which is something we can totally get behind!

The latest exhibit, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, caught our attention immediately. MP has long been fascinated by the story of Titanic and she was eager to share it with the kids and her nephew, C, who was visiting from California.

Note: Sadly, Willowbrook Village closed in fall 2016 after 46 years of operation. See this Portland Press Herald feature for more.

With Maine Maple Sunday landing on Easter this year, we knew we wouldn’t have time to visit one of our favorite farms. So, we decided to switch things up a little and make the trip to 19th Century Willowbrook Village in Newfield for Maple Syrup Saturday. The historic, country village has long been on our wish list of places to visit and this special event, which featured carriage rides, maple syrup making, a bean supper-style lunch, and a letterpress demonstration, gave us good reason to go.

Our family recently traveled to Camden for the start of Winterfest — a week-long celebration that features an ice-carving contest, polar plunge, freestyle skiing competition, family-friendly activities and the 2016 U.S. National Toboggan Championships, which take place at the Camden Snow Bowl February 5-7.
