Now that school is back in full swing, MP is feeling ready for a little self-care. She’s been running to soccer, gymnastics, the grocery store, school events, meetings and birthday parties. All good things, of course, but adapting to a new schedule can tire a mama out.

Enter MP’s go-to, Portland-based massage therapist: Ellie Falby. Ellie has helped MP through two pregnancies, running injuries, and back pain. Plus, she is a mother of two energetic girls, so she knows first-hand that parents need some TLC now and then.

MP would travel anywhere in Maine for good bread. This Saturday, the Maine Grain Alliance is hosting its annual bread fair with over 60 food vendors from across New England. Even though Skowhegan is an hour-plus drive, the promise of skilled bakers offering wood-fired pizza, decadent pastries, and crusty baguettes is enough for MP to get the family in the car and go.

The holidays are fast approaching, and as long as you’re running around getting ready, you might as well indulge in one of Maine’s best treats. The Gelato Fiasco, which is located in Portland and Brunswick, is best known for its creamy, inspired flavors of gelato—a dense, Italian ice cream made with less air than the American version. Their sorbetto is equally delicious for those who are dairy free. What we love? The flavors are made from scratch daily.

What’s not to love about a day devoted to local toy stores? One of our favorite shops, Rainbow Toys in Falmouth, is hosting a daylong event this Saturday to celebrate! The lovely staff promises all kinds of free fun for kids. There will be arts and crafts, face painting, and a giant outdoor game of chess.

The store is also raffling off a Rainbow Loom and bands (which are popular in the CP household these days), a Star Wars Lego set, books, stuffed animals, and craft kits from Alex Toys.

If you’re not near to Rainbow Toys, there are many independent toy shops throughout Maine: Island Treasure Toys, Planet Toys, Stone Soup, Out on a Whimsey, Percy’s Burrow, Bella Luna Toys, Treehouse Toys, and more. To find a toy store near your town, try this handy link.

One of the many things we love about our new home is an upstairs room made for family time. A cozy window seat with hidden storage holds our games: UNO, Scrabble, Apples to Apples, and more favorites. The downside? We haven’t had time to track down a pedestal table to go along with the seating.

CP#1 loves the Q+A game Hedbanz.

Since our search might take a month (or two), we’re so glad for events like the Southern Maine Family Game Festival. The day long event supports the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland. The wonderful caregivers at the hospital helped our nephew, Little J, after an unexpected setback last March and we are so grateful to them.

The Cute Potato family is feeling topsy turvy lately. We’re unpacking boxes every day (nearly 170 to get through, if you can believe). Plus, we’ve been busy with school meetings, soccer practice, dancing lessons, appointments, and adjusting to a new routine. All the team really wants to do is start making this house our own. The kids can’t wait to unpack their library of books, and MP is looking forward to hanging family photos and art on the walls.

With thoughts of books and decorating in mind, we’re giving away a little something for adults and kids. Thanks to our sponsor, Daytrip Jr., we have a gorgeous, chain-stitched pillow (valued at $120) called “Cat in the Garden,” and a copy of the children’s classic, The Cat at Night by author and illustrator Dahlov Ipcar.

Sometimes MP gets the chance to preview products that are too great not to share. Case in point: Tom & Teddy swimwear for fathers and sons. The colorful, Australian swim line is not sold in local stores yet, but you can shop Tom & Teddy online. MP thinks the swimwear is just right for Maine summers.
