For our family, one of the highlights of the season is shopping local fairs and festivals. We get to chat with vendors, learn about the beautiful things they make and find wonderful presents to give to loved ones. Following are some of the sweetest small gifts we discovered while shopping this month. Best of all, they’re just the right size for a stocking:

MP has been a fan of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (CMBG) in Boothbay for as long as she can remember. With over 295 acres of woodland and shorefront property, the lush grounds are made for people who adore plants, flowers and the Maine outdoors. CMBG is also home to a spectacular Children’s Garden, complete with fairytale cottages, a treehouse with a rope bridge, and engaging pathways to explore. When CMBG began its holiday light show in 2015, MP put the event on her wish list of things to do. There is nothing like seeing 500,000 colorful lights to help put a family in the holiday spirit!electric (more…)

Every once and awhile, MP goes through old photos and is reminded of a great event. Such is the case with the colorful, wonderfully quirky July 4th parade in Bath. We visited during the summer of 2013, and even though it was a hot, sweaty morning, our whole family just loved everything about this festive, community-powered parade.

The Cute Potato kids are growing up fast, and with each passing year, MP finds it more challenging to find a toy or game they’ll use again and again. For ideas, MP enlisted the help of toy expert Anita Demetropoulos, the owner of Island Treasure Toys. Her toy store, which began as a home business in 2001, has expanded to three locations over the years. Anita’s warm and welcoming shops in Yarmouth, Freeport, and Bath are favorites among parents for quality toys and games. With nearly 16 years of experience, Anita has valuable advice to offer when it comes to gift-giving.

How is it that Sunday Mother’s Day already? If you’re anything like MP, you’re shopping for a thoughtful gift just a few days before. Here are a few local favorites:

Signature Westport Leather Clutch

This clutch has a few good things going for it. First, MP loves this bag for its simple, classic style. The interior is deep, making it easy to store your wallet, makeup and a few additional essentials inside. And the best part? There’s a handy, zipper storage compartment on the outside of the bag for your cell phone.

Holy cow. This is a busy time of year! MP is trying her best to slow down and enjoy the season, but it’s easy to get swept up in the holiday hubbub. There’s our daily routine to maintain coupled with holiday parties, cards to order, trees to light, cookies to make and gifts to buy — all good things for certain, but it can be hard for a parent to keep up!

Thankfully, we live in a state where there are so many beautifully made gifts available to us, it’s easy to check a few items off the holiday to-do list. And it feels good to support our local makers!

One of MP’s favorite things about this time of year is the abundance of craft shows and holiday fairs throughout the state. Fortunately, CP#1 is always game to shop. She and MP will spend a Saturday morning visiting a few beloved fairs, as well as shows that are new to us.

And before you think, there is no way I’m bringing my little one to a craft show, consider that many feature live music, crafting tables for kids, homemade lunches, cookie walks, and garage sale finds (we’ve often scored on gently used books + games).

MP loves shopping neighborhood craft fairs because there has never been a time she hasn’t discovered a talented local maker. Here are few highlights from over the years, and links to the shows where she originally found their work:
