One of MP’s favorite things about this time of year is the abundance of craft shows and holiday fairs throughout the state. Fortunately, CP#1 is always game to shop. She and MP will spend a Saturday morning visiting a few beloved fairs, as well as shows that are new to us.

And before you think, there is no way I’m bringing my little one to a craft show, consider that many feature live music, crafting tables for kids, homemade lunches, cookie walks, and garage sale finds (we’ve often scored on gently used books + games).

MP loves shopping neighborhood craft fairs because there has never been a time she hasn’t discovered a talented local maker. Here are few highlights from over the years, and links to the shows where she originally found their work:

Every October, our dear friends host a pumpkin carving party at their house. It’s a simple celebration, but one we always look forward to during Halloween week. Each family brings their own pumpkin and an appetizer or a special dessert. Our friends make homemade pizzas and mulled cider. Of course, everyone dresses up.

It’s nearly the end of the school year and there’s not a parent alive who is not busy. There are school events, barbecues and birthday parties, summer schedules to figure out, and so much more. With all of this to juggle, it’s no wonder Father’s Day seems to sneak up on us. It’s a good thing we have so many great resources in Maine to make gift giving a little easier. Here are a few ideas for all of the fantastic fathers out there:

Our family loves discovering new hiking trails in New England. The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) book, “Outdoors with Kids: Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont” features 75 of the best family hiking, camping, and paddling trips in our region. There are some familiar trails highlighted, including favorites like Mackworth Island, Bradbury Mountain, and Gilsland Farm, but there are dozens more—both in coastal and inland Maine—that we have yet to explore. MP also loves that there is a quick, at-a-glance guide that gives parents an idea of what to expect, including trail difficulty, whether or not you can bring dogs, park fees and more handy information.

Mother’s Day is MP’s favorite holiday. What’s not to like about a day devoted to moms and all they do? She has a few items on her wish list this year—all from some of her favorite shops and craftspeople in Maine:

MP has admired this necklace from Turtle Love Co. for years now. Their mom and baby necklaces are pretty darn cute, too.

How did Valentine’s Day sneak up on us so fast? Our family loves to make homemade gifts and cards for friends and loved ones. Here are a few favorites:

1. A healthier version of Peppermint Patties that is so easy to make.

2. Make your own decorative stamps for cards with this simple egg carton craft.

3. A DIY Book of Love is such a sweet keepsake.

4. Kids can make their own crayons for classmates (try a heart-shaped silicon mold).

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Our team had a quiet New Years Eve (DP was sick with a cold), so to make up for it, we planned a decadent New Years Day Celebration. MP made a creamy quiche au fromage, bacon, and our favorite marbled chocolate banana bread. We had a giant bag of oranges in the fridge, so the kids made fresh-squeezed orange juice and poured it into champagne glasses. When the food was nearly ready, CP#1 and MP rifled through an old dress-up box for crazy hats, leis, and noisemakers to add to the festivities. The result? A fun New Years Day brunch for the four of us.
