Like all summers, ours seemed to go by just. like. that. Between our busy schedule and humid summer days, MP thought she missed the opportunity to pick strawberries altogether. And while buying fresh berries at the farmers’ market is an option, there’s nothing quite like going to a farm or field to pick your own fruit.

Then, via Facebook, the folks at Goss Berry Farm in Mechanic Falls reminded MP about late season strawberries. Suddenly, it didn’t matter that June and July had passed by in a flash, PYO strawberries were on the horizon! And if that weren’t enough, high bush blueberries and sunflowers were also plentiful. On a picture perfect August morning, MP and DP drove to the farm with plans to pick as many berries as humanly possible.IMG_1268

doll-best

MP discovered these adorable, heirloom dolls on Instagram, and was so pleased to find they’re created at Sunflower Farm, a popular goat farm in our hometown of Cumberland, Maine. Lila Ray— who grew up on the farm and later returned with her husband, Ethan—needed a creative pastime while waiting for her baby girl, Max, to arrive. The result was the sweet goat-inspired doll that led to her online shop, Max & Me.

If you haven’t noticed, goats are kind of a thing these days. You can be the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time). You can go to yoga class with goats, hike with goats or perhaps the most popular option, snuggle with baby goats (kids). Our own children find it hard to resist the bright eyes, gangly legs and soft fur of these adorable babies. They’d likely take a goat kid home for themselves, if we would allow for another pet. Fortunately for us, there are several visiting farms that offer spring goat snuggling sessions. Following are a few favorites:

We’ve been curious about fat tire biking ever since we spotted the bikes while cross-country skiing a few winters ago. Nowadays, it seems fat tire bikes are more prevalent than ever before. When MP spotted that Harris Farm in Dayton was offering a free fat tire biking demo with Kennebunkport Bicycle Company, she jumped at the chance to go.

Treworgy Family Orchard is located in Levant, just 10 miles outside of Bangor, where owner Gary Treworgy and his big creative family design an incredible corn maze on the grounds of their farm. Since 2001, visitors have enjoyed their impressive mazes — which have ranged from a variety of animals to a Celtic labyrinth and even a knight fighting a dragon! This year’s design is Paul Bunyan, Legendary Lumberjack, and our crew decided it was high time we visit the farm to experience the maze for ourselves.
