When our family takes a summer road trip, we’re not the “let’s hurry to our destination” types. Rather we like to check out the places that catch our interest along the way. While driving to Blue Hill, we decided to stop at the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory in Prospect. Located on the grounds of Fort Knox historic site, the 420 foot high observatory is the only one of its kind in the United States and the tallest in the world. In fact, it’s even taller than the Statue of Liberty!

One of the benefits of the kids getting older is the ability to take longer hikes. With this thought in mind, MP decided the New England Outdoor Center (NEOC), an adventure resort located on Millinocket Lake, would be an ideal home base while we explored the Katahdin region.

While researching different trails, MP was surprised to find a variety of hikes in Baxter State Park that are kid-friendly, each ranging 3-4 miles round trip. She had a few trails on her wish list, but friends from Millinocket suggested we check out the Debsconeag Ice Caves. Part of the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness area, the caves are located located just south of Baxter and Mount Katahdin. The caves are made up of heavy boulders that were pushed together by glaciers during the last ice age, and brave hikers can explore inside. Our family couldn’t wait to experience these uncommon ice caves for ourselves.

Last year, MP shared some of the adventures she hoped to try with the family during the winter season, and it was one of the blog’s most popular posts. We had so much fun exploring cross-country skiing and ice fishing, MP decided to come up with an updated list of activities for our family to try during the chilly months ahead:

Dog Sledding
The kids learned a little about sled dogs during L.L.Bean’s Winter Carnival, but they have always hoped for the opportunity to experience dog sledding first hand. Heywood Kennels in Augusta accepts Winter Kids passports, which offers families a generous discount on dog sledding adventures. Families get to meet the dogs, enjoy a sled ride and drink hot cocoa by the fire.

Welcome to our newest travel series, designed for moms and dads who need to get their parenting mojo back!

September and October are tough transition months, not only for kids, but for adults as well. There are new school, sports and work schedules to follow, longer grocery lists, more wash and more paperwork. MP feels like she is playing catch up from the start of school until Christmas.

To save everyone in the household from a grumpy mama, MP arranged an overnight trip to Oxbow Brewing Company in Newcastle. In June, the brewery opened its farmhouse—which was originally home to brewery co-owners, Geoff and Dash Masland—on Airbnb. Located next to the tasting room and nestled between 18 acres of woods and logging trails, a farmhouse visit seemed ideal for an overnight getaway.

When DP and MP arrived at Oxbow, a couple and their one-year-old son were seated at picnic tables in front of the tasting room. The father looked at DP and said, “Where do I know you from?” As it turns out, DP and this man realized they were childhood friends. Once the connection was established, we agreed to get a few beers and join them back outside.

Inside the warm, wood-paneled tasting room, we met Celeste Parke Merrill, a sweet, thirty-something who would be our bartender and farmhouse tour guide. When we told Celeste about our chance meeting with old friends, she said, “I love when that happens!” She encouraged us to take our time and enjoy. We could bring our bags to the farmhouse a little later. (more…)

When our travel plans changed in Canada, we decided to return to Maine and explore Moosehead Lake. DP and MP had never been to the area before. Little did we know how much we were about to discover!

During our first night in Moosehead, we decided to take a camping hiatus and found ourselves an affordable place to stay in Greenville Junction. After a day of driving all of us needed a hot shower and a good night’s rest. This simple, lakefront motel fit the bill.

We were treated this lake view come morning.

Now that the long winter season is upon us, MP has been brainstorming ways to the keep the family outdoors and active. Here are some of the adventures she’s hoping to take:

Ice Fishing
Full disclosure: Grumpy Old Men with Walter Mathau, Jack Lemmon and Ann Margaret is one of MPs favorite winter films. In the movie, the men are particularly competitive when it comes to ice fishing. MP has always dreamed of visiting an ice fishing hut and catching a fish or two. She’s hoping the team will be up for experiencing a guided trip of our own.
