Update: According to this article, Planet Toys closed its Rockland location in 2015. There is a second store in Camden.

We visited Belfast and Rockland during Veteran’s Day weekend and had such a good time. One of the best parts of the trip was shopping around town and getting a few ideas for gifts. The super cute owl lip glosses we found at Out on a Whimsey toy store make great stocking stuffers. And because we’re a family of cooks, MP loved the laminated kids’ aprons at The Good Table. Cooking Together: Having Fun in the Kitchen with Kids cookbook offers some fun ideas, like mini chicken pot pies and orange yogurt pops. Bellabooks has a lovely little corner of their shop devoted to kids. This is where CP#1, who is a fan of the Ivy+Bean series, discovered a paper doll kit of the same name.

Planet Toys in Rockland is an impressive toy shop that offers inspiration at every corner. This is a place where you can find fun gifts for kids and adults alike. Designer Doodles: Over 100 Designs to Complete and Create by Nellie Ryan is perfect for CP#1, our budding fashionista. A preppy Maine tee is just the thing for MP’s one-year-old nephew, Little J. CP#2, our resident Star Wars fan, adores the hilarious Darth Vader & Son by Geoffrey Brown. Something tells MP he will love to add the second volume to his library. Finally, MP can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t appreciate a good reading light for a gift. She tried this little clip-on light at home and wishes she purchased a few more.

How about you? Where’re your favorite place to shop and get gift ideas for the kids?

Since we’ve been away, MP is a little bit behind on everything, especially her Easter shopping. She likes to put some candy in the kids’ baskets, but small gifts are always fun and memorable. This sweet mouse from Laika Handknits is just the right size for little hands:

After reading Gail Gibbons’ Knights in Shining Armor about 30 times, CP# 2 is suddenly smitten with these brave warriors from the Middle Ages. So you can imagine MP’s delight when she found this wooden sword and shield set from Bella Luna Toys in in South Thomaston.

If you’re not familiar with Bella Luna, this lovely online shop offers toys designed for imaginative play. You can also find many fun items made right here in Maine. MP especially likes this handy, felt crayon holder from Belfast’s Mosey Handmade and this heirloom-quality Maine Dory Rocking Boat.

Owner Sarah Baldwin, who is also an experienced Waldorf school teacher, selects all of Bella Luna’s toys with a discerning eye. In an interview with Portland-based blogger and author Amanda Blake Soule last December, Sarah says, “I’ve steadily been adding new products–choosing only items that I believe have quality and real play value for children.”

Mom Potato admires Sarah’s passion for finding toys that last. And she knows a valiant young knight who will appreciate Sarah’s efforts, too.
