When there is not much snow on the ground during winter weekends, our family finds ourselves hunting for accessible adventures. We found a road trip to a new-to-us weekend farmers’ market is always a highlight. There’s a thrill to discovering local farms and artisans. All of us enjoy chatting with vendors, sampling new foods, and of course, shopping for all nature of good things. After two back-to-back travel weekends, our family decided to start a new summer tradition: Saturday morning breakfasts at a local beach. DP packed hard-boiled eggs, coffee, juice, croissants, and homemade strawberry jam. By 9:00 a.m., all of us were in bathing suits and ready to go.

This beautiful stretch of September weather is impossible to ignore. We left our boxes behind last Sunday, and decided to enjoy a family picnic at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. MP also wanted to check out the Bite Into Maine food truck, which has received national attention for their lobster rolls, and the progress of The Fort Williams Arboretum.

We brought hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and fruit skewers along, but MP and DP decided to split a Bite Into Maine lobster roll as an appetizer (we chose a version with wasabi mayonnaise). The lobster roll offered generous pieces of lobster and a hint of spice. The accolades are well-deserved— this roll is the perfect late summer treat.

StrwFest_poster_final_full_size-539x780It’s strawberry season, and this weekend, there are a host of festivals around the state. We like the sound of the Strawberry Fest, June 26-27, at Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth. The farm will also be open for PYO strawberries, perfect for all kinds of yummy, summer recipes.

Not close to Cape? Get your strawberry fix at one of these great spots:

First Congregational Church, North Yarmouth

South Freeport Church, South Freeport

Central School Grounds, South Berwick

And for a full list of PYO farms, visit Get Real Maine.
