In February, when the first of two big snowstorms hit, our family visited Heywood Kennel in Augusta for our inaugural dog sledding adventure. Owner Colby Briggs and his partner Erin Noll have operated the kennels since May 2016 after his parents retired from the business.

Located off a busy road, Heywood is home to a wood-fired warming hut and 30 good-natured sled dogs. The temperature was below 20-degrees on the morning we arrived, and our hosts were kind enough to offer extra snow pants (MP forgot her own) and hand warmers. Once we were ready, Colby warned us that the dogs would be loud when we met them at the kennels and for good reason. After a mild January with little snow, the dogs couldn’t wait to pull a sled.

MP and DP recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. To mark this festive occasion, DP planned an overnight trip to Boston for all of us. The plan? The kids would spend the day and evening with their Uncle Joe, while DP and MP would enjoy dinner, a surprise concert and a night to ourselves!

Uncle Joe planned to take the kids to Boda Borg, which is best described as a live action video game. The game, which originated in Sweden in the nineties, takes players into various themed rooms (a jungle, a prison, a mouse trap, etc.) where they must work with their team to find a way out. The kids couldn’t wait to visit Boda Borg and barely turned around to say goodbye once it was time to go.

After leaving the kids with their uncle, we checked into our hotel, which was located just a block away from the historic Wang Theatre (where we were to see the concert that evening). “I don’t know any other way to tell you who we’re seeing tonight,” DP said, “Let’s just walk to the theater.”

MP finds herself craving lush green forests during this unpredictable April. She’ll look back at pictures from the summer and wish for warmer weather. Last year, during a family road trip to Rockland, a friend recommended exploring the Thomaston Town Trail. The mile-long trail is known for its magical boardwalk path that leads walkers to Split Rock – a gargantuan, glacial rock surrounded by Birch trees.

Our family recently traveled to Camden for the start of Winterfest — a week-long celebration that features an ice-carving contest, polar plunge, freestyle skiing competition, family-friendly activities and the 2016 U.S. National Toboggan Championships, which take place at the Camden Snow Bowl February 5-7.

Before you read on, know this: driving a long distance without screens to camp with your family requires fortitude and patience. There will be bathroom breaks, multiple requests for snacks and if you have more than one child, backseat arguments are guaranteed. You’ll play games like Ninja Mad Libs and listen to stadium rock and Meghan Trainor for hours on Spotify.

On the upside, once you’ve arrived at camp, you get to spend quality time with your kids, explore new places, eat delicious meals cooked over an open fire, and enjoy full days outdoors without distractions.

With these pluses in mind, we planned a two-week excursion to Parc du Saguenay in Quebec with hopes of also seeing parts of the Gaspé Peninsula, and then traveling to Northern Maine and Campobello Island, New Brunswick.

Our team had a quiet New Years Eve (DP was sick with a cold), so to make up for it, we planned a decadent New Years Day Celebration. MP made a creamy quiche au fromage, bacon, and our favorite marbled chocolate banana bread. We had a giant bag of oranges in the fridge, so the kids made fresh-squeezed orange juice and poured it into champagne glasses. When the food was nearly ready, CP#1 and MP rifled through an old dress-up box for crazy hats, leis, and noisemakers to add to the festivities. The result? A fun New Years Day brunch for the four of us.

It’s hard to believe that MP started Cute Potato 5 years ago this month! CP#1 and #2 were two- and three-years old. Here they are in one of our earliest posts that featured Dollar Store finds.
