Every summer, without fail, our family goes to the New Gloucester Strawberry Festival. We make sure to eat a light dinner, so our bellies can handle the humongous desserts that the volunteers at the festival so lovingly create.

We’re biased of course, but we happen to think that DP is one incredible Dad. MP and the kids plan to spoil him for Father’s Day with delicious food, a little dancing, and a day out on the town. We’re also considering a great Maine-inspired gift—something he can enjoy all to himself. Here’s a list of our favorites:

A tour on the Maine Brew Bus (we’re partial to the “Northern Exposure” tour).

This book by Brian Kevin, Associate Editor at Downeast Magazine looks like an interesting read:

MP had some serious ants in her pants earlier this month. When this happens, the family can bet on a road trip. Any change of scenery will do. We decided on a visit to The New Moon Restaurant  (aka DP’s new favorite breakfast place) followed by a trip to the Saco River Market.

The New Moon is in a cute yellow building with a high-pitched roof that looks straight out of a fairy tale. In March, the space was still decorated for the holidays, complete with garland hanging from the ceiling, snowman decorations, and white lights. But no matter. The breakfast menu looked promising. MP decided on eggs with feta, spinach, and a side of tomato hollandaise. CP#1 chose crepes with fresh strawberries. And DP ordered chicken waffles with gravy. CP#2 kept to his standard: chocolate chip pancakes and sausage.

Our food and coffee arrived quickly, which is always a good thing with hungry kids in tow. MP’s egg dish was filling and the creamy hollandaise added nice flavor. The meal also came with a healthy side of roasted potatoes and thick slices of Rye bread.

MP would like to welcome our newest sponsor, the Family Ice Center in Falmouth, to Cute Potato! She recently had the pleasure of chatting with Cumberland-based dad, Josh Brainerd, who manages the ice skating arena. Like most parents, Josh recognizes the importance of an affordable, accessible, and clean recreation center. During his two years as manager, he’s worked hard to make the Family Ice Center a fun destination for kids and parents.

Since it’s strawberry season and the weather is suddenly cool, the team decided the time was right to try making buttermilk biscuits for shortcake. If MP had known how easy it is to make biscuits—or how much the kids enjoyed creating them—she would have attempted this recipe long ago. We had warm, flaky biscuits in less than an hour. Such a treat!

We had a lot to celebrate over the weekend: the end of the school year, Father’s Day, plus our friend and neighbor’s 40th birthday. To kick off the festivities, we took an afternoon sailing trip with the Portland Schooner Co. A group of us boarded the Bagheera—a 1920’s, wooden schooner that sails from Portland Harbor into the Casco Bay. The day was perfect for a sail. The sun was bright, the weather was warm, and we were all in good spirits.

Father’s Day is fast approaching, and as usual, MP is behind schedule! Thankfully, there are plenty of great shops and purveyors nearby to help with gift giving. Take for example the smart folks at Coffee by Design, who are offering a special, dark roast just for dads. Even better, one dollar for each pound sold of this coffee goes to Boys to Men—a non-profit organization that teaches adolescent boys the importance of non-violence and respect for all genders.
