How is it that Sunday Mother’s Day already? If you’re anything like MP, you’re shopping for a thoughtful gift just a few days before. Here are a few local favorites:

Signature Westport Leather Clutch

This clutch has a few good things going for it. First, MP loves this bag for its simple, classic style. The interior is deep, making it easy to store your wallet, makeup and a few additional essentials inside. And the best part? There’s a handy, zipper storage compartment on the outside of the bag for your cell phone.

Winter is finally here and for our family, the drastic change in temperature demands we pay better attention to our skin. Wind, cold and bright sun can be especially hard on sensitive skin like ours. CP#1 is prone to chapped lips, and MP, who runs outside throughout the winter months, has rough hands and feet. And whether we are cross country skiing or sledding, all of us need to protect our lips and faces from the elements.

For MP, the challenge has always been finding a bodycare line that appeals to the whole family. Enter Mad Gab’s — a Westbrook-based company that specializes in lip and body balms made with a balanced combination of natural and organic ingredients. Their line also includes convenient, SPF 30 Sun Sticks for sun protection on the go.

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us and the busy weeks leading up to the holidays are just beginning, we focus on straightforward and satisfying weekly meals — crockpot chili, simple soups, hearty pasta dishes and quick stir fry-recipes.

Our friend Chef Watcharee Limanon adds to our easy, weeknight repertoire with her collection of delicious thai sauces. There’s a crowd-pleasing peanut sauce that is a great for chicken skewers and sticky brown rice. The flavorful Pad Thai sauce, which is new to Watcharee’s collection, is a favorite paired with rice noodles and veggies. And the Massaman and green curry sauces add a hint of spice that elevates any stir fry to restaurant quality.

Our friends and sponsors at Daytrip Jr. are generously offering a Cute Potato reader the chance to win a Classic Walker Wagon from Radio Flyer. This little wagon is a sentimental favorite in our family. CP#1 and #2 used it in the backyard when they were first beginning to walk. The two have pushed stuffed animals, dolls, and even cousins in the wagon.

There are family events we look forward to each fall, and despite how much our children have grown, the Apple Day celebration at Maine Audubon in Falmouth remains a favorite. CP#1 and #2 delight in making their own cider, listening to live music, and exploring the rolling trails along the marsh.

This year promises to be one of the best celebrations yet, as our Audubon friends have added a special event — the launch of a new board book called, “A Little Brown Bat Story” written by Melissa Kim and illustrated by Jada Fitch. The book, which teaches preschoolers about brown bat behavior and habitat, is the second in the Wildlife on the Move series from Islandport Press and Maine Audubon. What we love most: 10% of the proceeds from the book help fund Maine Audubon’s outreach programs for underserved preschools!

If your family visited the Yarmouth Clam Festival this year, there is a good chance your kids played on the Litl’ Squirts Wooden Pirate Ship. Will Boyle, the owner and founder of the Maine made natural juice, decided an active display for his brand was ideal for his target customer—kids. And boy, was he right! CP#1 and #2 were immediately drawn to the ship, and not only for play, they had a feeling a Litl’ Squirts juice might be in their future.

Last Christmas, CP#1 and MP signed up for a kids’ wreath making workshop at O’Donals Nursery in Gorham. The nursery provides decorative greens and wreath making supplies for a small fee. When we arrived, there were long tables filled with boughs of White Pine, Cedar, and Balsam. Jeff O’Donal, our patient instructor, showed us how to arrange the greens in a fan shape before placing them on a wreath ring.
