One of the highlights of spring for Cute Potato is the opening of Toots Ice Cream in North Yarmouth for the season. Fans patiently wait on line for decadent homemade ice cream served from a little red caboose. Owner Martha Grover-Lambert and her team have been making great ice cream for nearly 10 years using milk from Garelick Farms. There are always new flavors available, but we especially like Coconut Willy (coconut with Needhams), Pig Pen (coffee with crushed Oreos), and Candy Store Floor (vanilla with Butterfinger, Nestle Crunch, Twix, and caramel cups).

For those who can’t live without Toots all winter, Martha offers ice cream sundae parties for up to 10 people. MP loved this idea, and thought it would be fun to have a few friends over to celebrate Valentine’s Day with some special treats from Toots.

Whenever MP drives on Route One in Yarmouth, past the modest office that houses Islandport Press, she feels so proud. How cool is it to live near a company that publishes the works of Dahlov Ipcar and Robert F. Baldwin?

We love Dahlov Ipcar’s books for their vivid, unforgettable illustrations. Her stories capture the beauty and simplicity of everyday life. We meet a farmer who works tirelessly to enjoy the fruits of his labor, a boy who is comforted by a handmade quilt, and a family who honors their hardworking mare by keeping her long after she’s retired.

Note: We were very sad to learn Peek-a-Boo Children’s Center closed in June 2014. For more play spaces in the area, try Greenlight Studio in Portland or The Rumpus Room in Brunswick.

The Peek-a-Boo Children’s Center in Westbrook is one of our favorite indoor play spaces in Maine for good reason. Located in the Dana Warp Mill, the inviting space highlights creative and active play. Kids ages 0-5 will feel right at home. In fact, they may not want to leave. Little ones will enjoy the colorful, infant playroom with their parents, and older kids can explore the Cedar Works playground, sensory table or cool art space, to name a few.

Yes, this is a blog about all things kid-friendly, but every once and awhile, MP posts about something with fabulous Maine moms in mind. That’s why today’s giveaway features a stunning necklace and earrings from Minka. MP discovered this stylish Kennebunkport boutique and gallery while scouting for 48 Hours.

ImageMinka is filled with gorgeous, handmade jewelry and leather bags designed by Michelle Larochelle. Her partner, artist Christopher Larochelle, creates the ethereal paintings displayed in the shop. You’ll also find Maine made gifts for yourself or someone you love, like body care, stationery, and T-shirts for adults and children. (more…)

Not long ago, MP posted about how much the Cute Potato team enjoys Gather; a new, family-friendly restaurant on Main Street in Yarmouth. What is it about Gather that appeals? One reader put it best:

“We’ve taken our 3-1/2-year old there a few times now. So great to get to eat good food in a more sophisticated atmosphere with a toddler and not feel out of place.”– Andrea Berry

In late January, the Cute Potato team visited the L.L.Bean Winter Carnival in Freeport. The outdoor carnival is an impressive event, where families get to try snowshoeing, ice fishing, cross country skiing, and more snowy day activities for free! The CP kids had a blast trying all of the activities, but their favorite by far was snow tubing down an expansive hill, again and again. It’s undeniable—L.L.Bean makes a super cool snow tube. And guess what? Today, you could win an L.L.Bean Sonic Snow Tube (regularly valued at $109) for your family!
