Looking for a special Easter basket? Team Cute Potato has done some scouting around for the big day, and we hope these ideas will provide inspiration:

We love these little baskets from Byrne & Carlson Chocolatier in Kittery. They’re just the right size for baby, and they can be purchased ready made with a small chocolate bunny and solid chocolate eggs inside.

There are many beautiful baskets at garden stores and nurseries. Check out these natural, twig baskets from Allen, Sterling & Lothrop in Falmouth:

Searching for something out of the ordinary? We spotted this cherry picking basket at Gurley Antiques Gallery in Yarmouth, as well as some vintage Easter cards and papers.

We found these adorable, gingham-lined baskets at our local Home Goods store:

Visit tomorrow, and we’ll have ideas for fun fillers. Happy spring time shopping, everyone!

Congratulations to Sue Sass, the winner of our Frugal Find contest! Sue will be receiving $10 towards her favorite thrift store in Maine.

We were thrilled by the response to our contest, and even more excited by all of the great suggestions. Sue discovered a toddler-sized, L.L.Bean winter coat at Good Will in Falmouth for just $4.99. Winter coats like this one often sell for at least $50. Way to go Sue!

Cute Potato also learned that the Freeport Community Center Thrift Shop offers 2-1 sales on clothing most every Wednesday. And best of all, kids’ clothing is priced at $1.00-$2.00. All of the proceeds go to Freeport Community Services, which offers support to local people in need.

Other favorites included the popular Lots for Tots in Falmouth and Scarborough, which we featured in our last post, Bull Moose Music for used video games and movies, The Kids Room in Brunswick and Kids Unlimited in Portland.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas, and happy shopping!

Thanks to all of our readers for sharing their best bargains on kids’ toys and clothing. Our winner will be announced on Wednesday, along with a list of our favorite entries.

In the mean time, we spotted this Where the Wild Things Are 36-piece floor puzzle by Mudpuppy for $3.99 at Lots for Tots in Falmouth. The same puzzle retails for $10.00 online. Later that day, we were thrilled to find more Mudpuppy puzzles at the HomeGoods store in Scarborough, also for $3.99.

We love these mini puzzles because they feature some of our favorite story book characters, like Lois Lenski’s Cowboy Small and David McKee’s Elmer. Plus the cute packaging includes a carry handle, making the puzzle a perfect holiday gift for toddlers.

Layout 1Cute Potato #1 is a dancing machine. It all started with the PBS Kids’ show, Angelina Ballerina, and now she wears her pink tutu whenever she can. She’s even made up her own move, “The Rose Bush,” which words can do no justice.

So it’s no surprise that we scooped up tickets to The Magic Toy Shop at the Maine State Ballet Theater in Falmouth. We knew our prima potato would love seeing dancing dolls, teddy bears and dogs flitting across the stage. Plus, the show is only 45 minutes long, which is just right for fidgety little ones like ours.

And who knows? Maybe the show will inspire more original moves like the Rose Bush. We can only hope.

Now showing at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth

Now showing at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth

All day Thursday, team Cute Potato was hoping it wouldn’t rain, so we could attend the Maine Audubon’s Annual Peony Bloom and Ice Cream Social. We love ice cream, especially when it’s free! And we were looking forward to viewing the peony garden.

The good news? The stunning pink, white and fuschia blooms at the Audubon’s Gilsland Farm did not disappoint – even with a little rain beginning to fall.

And the table for the social was set up indoors, so it seemed all was not lost, until we learned the ice cream wouldn’t be served until 6:30. The team looked wilted, but all were temporarily revived when they spotted the great books, toys and gifts in the Audubon’s Nature Store.

As for the ice cream social? The Cute Potato kids were sleepy, and needed to head home pronto. But the Audubon isn’t going away. And we’ll be back soon to enjoy the gardens with ice cream cones in hand.
