Like all summers, ours seemed to go by just. like. that. Between our busy schedule and humid summer days, MP thought she missed the opportunity to pick strawberries altogether. And while buying fresh berries at the farmers’ market is an option, there’s nothing quite like going to a farm or field to pick your own fruit.

Then, via Facebook, the folks at Goss Berry Farm in Mechanic Falls reminded MP about late season strawberries. Suddenly, it didn’t matter that June and July had passed by in a flash, PYO strawberries were on the horizon! And if that weren’t enough, high bush blueberries and sunflowers were also plentiful. For CP#1’s 10th birthday, our family decided to venture into Portland for the afternoon and treat ourselves to homemade sodas at Vena’s Fizz House. The cozy corner soda bar, which is located on Fore Street, is open to all ages. One of the highlights of spring for Cute Potato is the opening of Toots Ice Cream in North Yarmouth for the season. Fans patiently wait on line for decadent homemade ice cream served from a little red caboose. Owner Martha Grover-Lambert and her team have been making great ice cream for nearly 10 years using milk from Garelick Farms. There are always new flavors available, but we especially like Coconut Willy (coconut with Needhams), Pig Pen (coffee with crushed Oreos), and Candy Store Floor (vanilla with Butterfinger, Nestle Crunch, Twix, and caramel cups).

For those who can’t live without Toots all winter, Martha offers ice cream sundae parties for up to 10 people. MP loved this idea, and thought it would be fun to have a few friends over to celebrate Valentine’s Day with some special treats from Toots.

We’ve visited many parks throughout the state, but lately, we’re head over heels for Fort Edgecomb, located just outside of Wiscasset.
