First, can MP just say, wow! It’s been well over a month since she’s posted here. She forgets how busy the start of the school year can be for her family. That’s why whenever Columbus Day weekend rolls around, it’s a gift to sleep in, catch up on a few to-dos around the house, and explore our home state.

As soon as the weather turns warmer, our family seeks out walks that are new to us. The Trout Pond Trail to Cascade Falls, which is part of Saco Bay Trails, is only 1/4 mile long and dog-friendly. And since spring is the season when waterfalls run fastest, we thought it would be a great time to visit.

MP finds herself craving lush green forests during this unpredictable April. She’ll look back at pictures from the summer and wish for warmer weather. Last year, during a family road trip to Rockland, a friend recommended exploring the Thomaston Town Trail. The mile-long trail is known for its magical boardwalk path that leads walkers to Split Rock – a gargantuan, glacial rock surrounded by Birch trees.

It always amazes MP how much there is to discover in her own backyard. Some of her running friends introduced her to the newly expanded nature trails in the Cumberland Town Forest. The dense, 100 acres of land, which was donated to Cumberland in 1891, is an ideal place for a quiet walk with kids. The trailhead is easy to find — simply park at the town offices and the entrance is next to the police station.
