Note: Sweet Fabrics owner Jana Markow now lives in Vermont, but you can still find her beautiful work in stores throughout Maine.

While we were shopping the Commons—a thoughtful gift shop in Eastport—we discovered these simple, fabric ukuleles from Calais-based designer Jana Markow. We love her whimsical fabric choices and details, especially the clever ukelele strap.

Jana has been sewing for nearly 25 years. Her company, Sweet Fabrics, offers clothing, toys and more handmade gifts for kids. Jana says her two children inspire her to create toys that are better than most plastic versions. And clearly, she has succeeded. Her wool felt lunch bags and foods are a great addition to a play kitchen.

We’re also fans of Jana’s veggie-themed baby tees. The appliqués are so cute and colorful. We can’t wait to buy one for a new baby gift.

To see more of Jana’s work, visit the Sweet Fabrics shop online.
