Flash back to nearly 11 years ago when MP was a new mom. Her go-to resources included a few friends who recently had babies, babycenter.com, a collection of parenting books on the bedside table and her obstetrician. If an event existed to expose her to everything her community had to offer new parents, she would have jumped at the chance to go.

Our family is expecting a baby nephew (and cousin) any day now, so you can imagine our delight when we discovered Baby Crates from CrateFull of Maine – a new gift business started by Chris Avantaggio, Nathan O’Leary and John Turner. The three entrepreneurs, who run their own successful companies, namely LiveME, Mainely SEO and Traps Eyewear, began selling gift boxes filled with a variety of Maine made items in December 2015. This year, they’re offering themed crates full of good things including Maine made sweets and handcrafted baby goods.

There are family events we look forward to each fall, and despite how much our children have grown, the Apple Day celebration at Maine Audubon in Falmouth remains a favorite. CP#1 and #2 delight in making their own cider, listening to live music, and exploring the rolling trails along the marsh.

This year promises to be one of the best celebrations yet, as our Audubon friends have added a special event — the launch of a new board book called, “A Little Brown Bat Story” written by Melissa Kim and illustrated by Jada Fitch. The book, which teaches preschoolers about brown bat behavior and habitat, is the second in the Wildlife on the Move series from Islandport Press and Maine Audubon. What we love most: 10% of the proceeds from the book help fund Maine Audubon’s outreach programs for underserved preschools!

This beautiful stretch of September weather is impossible to ignore. We left our boxes behind last Sunday, and decided to enjoy a family picnic at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. MP also wanted to check out the Bite Into Maine food truck, which has received national attention for their lobster rolls, and the progress of The Fort Williams Arboretum.

We brought hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and fruit skewers along, but MP and DP decided to split a Bite Into Maine lobster roll as an appetizer (we chose a version with wasabi mayonnaise). The lobster roll offered generous pieces of lobster and a hint of spice. The accolades are well-deserved— this roll is the perfect late summer treat.

The Cute Potato family is feeling topsy turvy lately. We’re unpacking boxes every day (nearly 170 to get through, if you can believe). Plus, we’ve been busy with school meetings, soccer practice, dancing lessons, appointments, and adjusting to a new routine. All the team really wants to do is start making this house our own. The kids can’t wait to unpack their library of books, and MP is looking forward to hanging family photos and art on the walls.

With thoughts of books and decorating in mind, we’re giving away a little something for adults and kids. Thanks to our sponsor, Daytrip Jr., we have a gorgeous, chain-stitched pillow (valued at $120) called “Cat in the Garden,” and a copy of the children’s classic, The Cat at Night by author and illustrator Dahlov Ipcar.

Whenever MP drives on Route One in Yarmouth, past the modest office that houses Islandport Press, she feels so proud. How cool is it to live near a company that publishes the works of Dahlov Ipcar and Robert F. Baldwin?

We love Dahlov Ipcar’s books for their vivid, unforgettable illustrations. Her stories capture the beauty and simplicity of everyday life. We meet a farmer who works tirelessly to enjoy the fruits of his labor, a boy who is comforted by a handmade quilt, and a family who honors their hardworking mare by keeping her long after she’s retired.
