There are family events we look forward to each fall, and despite how much our children have grown, the Apple Day celebration at Maine Audubon in Falmouth remains a favorite. CP#1 and #2 delight in making their own cider, listening to live music, and exploring the rolling trails along the marsh.

This year promises to be one of the best celebrations yet, as our Audubon friends have added a special event — the launch of a new board book called, “A Little Brown Bat Story” written by Melissa Kim and illustrated by Jada Fitch. The book, which teaches preschoolers about brown bat behavior and habitat, is the second in the Wildlife on the Move series from Islandport Press and Maine Audubon. What we love most: 10% of the proceeds from the book help fund Maine Audubon’s outreach programs for underserved preschools!

Last weekend, we visited the East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool. The sanctuary, which was donated to the Maine Audubon in the late seventies, is tucked away, but once we spotted cars parked on the road, we knew our destination couldn’t be far. Our team followed a short, woodland trail that parallels the Abenakee golf course. The trail opens to green pasture with sweeping ocean views. Wood Island Lighthouse also dots the skyline.

In the past two weeks, winter has made itself known. We can’t remember a February with multiple snow days in a row! Thankfully our Maine towns keep us from going stir crazy by throwing some of the best winter festivals. This year, we are looking forward to the Maine Audubon Winter Carnival. MP’s friend and co-worker, Melissa Kim, will be celebrating her new board book, “A Snowy Owl Story,” with a reading, interactive owl display, and book signing. The book is a part of a new Islandport Press/Audubon series called “Wildlife on the Move,” which tell the true tales of wildlife in New England and the roles people play in their lives.

Now showing at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth

All day Thursday, team Cute Potato was hoping it wouldn’t rain, so we could attend the Maine Audubon’s Annual Peony Bloom and Ice Cream Social. We love ice cream, especially when it’s free! And we were looking forward to viewing the peony garden.

The good news? The stunning pink, white and fuschia blooms at the Audubon’s Gilsland Farm did not disappoint – even with a little rain beginning to fall.

And the table for the social was set up indoors, so it seemed all was not lost, until we learned the ice cream wouldn’t be served until 6:30. The team looked wilted, but all were temporarily revived when they spotted the great books, toys and gifts in the Audubon’s Nature Store.

As for the ice cream social? The Cute Potato kids were sleepy, and needed to head home pronto. But the Audubon isn’t going away. And we’ll be back soon to enjoy the gardens with ice cream cones in hand.
