Our family is expecting a baby nephew (and cousin) any day now, so you can imagine our delight when we discovered Baby Crates from CrateFull of Maine – a new gift business started by Chris Avantaggio, Nathan O’Leary and John Turner. The three entrepreneurs, who run their own successful companies, namely LiveME, Mainely SEO and Traps Eyewear, began selling gift boxes filled with a variety of Maine made items in December 2015. This year, they’re offering themed crates full of good things including Maine made sweets and handcrafted baby goods.

Holy cow. This is a busy time of year! MP is trying her best to slow down and enjoy the season, but it’s easy to get swept up in the holiday hubbub. There’s our daily routine to maintain coupled with holiday parties, cards to order, trees to light, cookies to make and gifts to buy — all good things for certain, but it can be hard for a parent to keep up!

Thankfully, we live in a state where there are so many beautifully made gifts available to us, it’s easy to check a few items off the holiday to-do list. And it feels good to support our local makers!

CP#2 is the kind of kid that rarely gets cold. The temperature could be 20º outside and you’d find him in short sleeves waiting for the bus. His mother, on the other hand, is shivering nearly all the time. Maybe that’s why MP is always on the lookout for cute, warm things. If she’s going to be cold six months of the year, MP figures she might as well have some colorful winter gear to enjoy.

With this thought in mind, you can imagine MPs delight when she discovered Yarmouth-based Betty Louise Studio. Studio owner Katie Chalmers creates adorable hats for adults and kids. Katie crochets all of her wool hats by hand, and her attention to detail shows.

BLSHAT

All of Katie’s hats are hand washable, and fit perfectly with regular wear.

Just in time for the chilly weekend ahead, Katie has generously offered to giveaway a child’s hat (3T-5T) to one lucky Cute Potato winner. All you need to do is comment below. Contest ends Saturday, January 17, 2015 at midnight EST.

Good luck and stay warm, everybody!

Congratulations to lucky #1—Jillaine Geary! Jillaine has won a child’s hat from Betty Louise Studio. Thanks to everyone who entered. We’ll have another great giveaway coming up soon!

MP will admit, there are so many gift guides online, it’s enough to overwhelm even the most enthusiastic holiday shopper. However, it’s hard not to give the talented artisans we have in Maine a shout out. There is something about giving a handmade gift from home that makes the holidays extra special. Here are a few favorites:

This nightlight from The Orange Chair Studio in Rockland would be a cute addition to a girl’s room — no matter her age.

While shopping the Craft & Art Show at the Yarmouth Clam Festival this summer, the team discovered The Merry Crown Society. Shop owner, Bonnie, who hails from Fryeburg, designs whimsical crowns, wands, swords, and masks using felt made from recycled plastic bottles. CP#2 was completely smitten with Bonnie’s booth. If MP allowed it, he would spent hours trying out cool disguises.

Father’s Day is fast approaching, and as usual, MP is behind schedule! Thankfully, there are plenty of great shops and purveyors nearby to help with gift giving. Take for example the smart folks at Coffee by Design, who are offering a special, dark roast just for dads. Even better, one dollar for each pound sold of this coffee goes to Boys to Men—a non-profit organization that teaches adolescent boys the importance of non-violence and respect for all genders.
