MP always forgets how busy May and June can be. It feels as though our family has been living on recreational fields. We’re regularly driving back and forth to practices, to lacrosse and baseball games, and trying to stay on top of work and home life. Summer break and all of its pleasures— from lazy afternoons on the beach to barbecues with friends— couldn’t come soon enough. And of course, MP can’t wait to share her new book, “The Maine Play Book,” and its fun outdoor adventures with families around the state. If you’re curious, here’s a peek inside its pages:

Mid-April has arrived and dare we say, it’s beginning to feel like spring is really here. Most of the snow has melted in our yard, chickadees are singing in the early morning hours, and we even spotted crocuses blooming in a friend’s garden. These signs of the season may not seem like much if you live in warmer climates, but for Maine families like us, there is so much hope attached to these small gifts from nature. To celebrate, we’re sharing some of our favorite spaces to visit in April and May.

East Point Sanctuary, Biddeford Pool
On a warm spring day, we love to visit this Maine Audubon sanctuary by the sea. Street parking is limited, but if you get to the sanctuary early, kids can spend hours playing in the open fields, flying kites or scaling rocks.

MP adores fall in Maine — the crisp mornings, the golden sunlight and the vibrant leaves make the season feel like a celebration. Winter is right around the corner, and for this reason, she feels compelled to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Our family had never traveled to the Rangeley area before, so we decided to make the most of an autumn weekend in this stunning part of the state.
