Every once in awhile, on a spectacular summer weeknight, our family will act like tourists and visit a relaxed, beachside destination for dinner. Shade, a restaurant located inside the Higgins Beach Inn in Scarborough, is such a place. The casual restaurant features a bar with cherry red chairs. There is table seating on the cozy sun porch or on the spacious screened porch. On the day we arrived, we were unusually early, so the hostess invited our family to choose a non-alcoholic drink at the bar and walk to the beach while we waited.

It’s May! Finally. Our lawn is becoming greener, flowering trees are in bloom, and there are daffodils sprouting up everywhere. Last year, to celebrate this greening of our landscape, we traveled to Broadturn Farm in Scarborough for a May Day celebration. MP has long admired the farm for its beautiful flowers and farm-based educational programs. She couldn’t wait to visit with the kids and Grandma Cookie.

It’s been awhile since Cute Potato featured a frugal find. Since Halloween is less than two weeks away, MP thought she’d share one of her favorite places to shop for inexpensive costumes.

Lots for Tots, with locations in Falmouth and Scarborough, is the place to find a treasure trove of costumes for babies, toddlers, and kids. On the day MP visited, she discovered everything from cozy Winnie the Pooh themed dress ups to a corduroy hobby horse costume.

Cute and cozy Disney costumes.

Every once and awhile, MP comes across a local Etsy shop, and wonders how she never knew about it. The Bakers Party Shop is one such place. The shop offers everything a parent could want for a party, including colorful cupcake liners, sprinkles, favor bags, and more festive supplies.

The Bakers Confections is the brainchild of Scarborough’s Shauna Osteen and Esther Holden. While working at Le Roux Kitchen in Portland, the two ladies bonded over their love of baking, and decided to start a bakers supply shop of their own.

MP has been searching for a local source for bakers twine. So cute for wrapping gifts!

DP celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday. To surprise him, MP thought it would be fun to make t-shirts to commemorate the big day. She had this silly idea of creating a whoopie pie shirt that reads, “Whoopie! You’re 40.” Surprisingly, the shirts were so easy to make.

CP#2 modeling (sort of) his whoopie pie shirt.

Our friend, photographer Cathy Davis, guest posts today about her family’s recent visit to Acadia National Park:

My husband and I have always wanted to visit Acadia National Park. We’ve heard of the area’s beauty and peacefulness, but wondered if it was possible to enjoy the scenery with three children under 5. This fall, we traveled to Bar Harbor for an overnight trip to find out.

To our surprise, the whole family was able to enjoy Acadia’s serene and amazing views on our hike up Gorham Mountain. The parking lot and start to the trail is on the right after Thunder Hole on Park Loop Road. The trail is .9 miles to the summit.

MP has a thing for vintage cards, so last Valentine’s Day she decided to purchase some for her duo. The idea? Every year, CP#1 and #2 will receive a Valentine that they can save and display. MP found these sweet cards at Gurley Antiques Gallery in Scarborough.

Giving old-fashioned Valentines to the team is such a fun tradition. And it gives MP an excuse to visit some of her favorite antique shops!
